Orange Boxes & Hessian Covered Suites – Ooh Mrs
Ahh the good old 1970s and 1980s – a time when taste in decorating and styling seemed to go completely out of the window! Oh my goodness when I look back to when my parent bought their lovely brand new house when we were teens. The bright and garish colours shown in the decorating colour charts were terrifying. Mum and dad were far too conservative to go for anything much more exciting than beiges and a few pastel shades in the bedrooms and bathrooms. But our next door neighbours, much younger and ready to experiment were all for the bright zingy oranges, lime green and eye popping cerise and magenta shades. They were great fans of Terence Conran and his habitat empire was just coming along. The neighbours didn’t have a lot of money so they used discarded orange boxes stacked together for shelving and covered their old 3 pce suite with hessian sacking on which they sewed coloured motifs. It was as grim as it sounds but they loved it and felt they were embracing the ‘change’ needed.
