Caring And Repairing Coming Back Into Fashion
It has long been an established ritual in some families for the decorating to begin in the spring time. Where this originally began is not clear but there is a certain cleaning and renesting happens about Easter time too so it makes sense. OUr family used to change our clothes from the winter to summer sets at Easter too. Up into the loft our dad would go, and down would come his huge metal chest that held such excitement. Would anything fit . . . . in those days, not so many years after the end of ww2, it was imperative to keep everything that still exhibited life, including many pairs of white ankle socks and plimsoles. Keeping the old and repairing them rather went out of fashion with the rush of ‘buy, buy, buy’ from the 1980s onwards. The need for stores to keep getting new sales has rather made us stop cherishing anything. But houses and clothes alike need our love and care more than ever now that we’ve suffered the virus induced lockdown for wo many weeks.
